Eating well while enjoying the Convention Emerald City Comicon is in town from March 1st through March 3rd. Seattle’s ECCC has been growing in the past few years and they have started booking elite nerd icons like Patrick Stewart, Felicia Day and William Shatner. The con has also expanded to a 3 day-long event and this year will be the first time the con will completely take over the entire Convention Center! With thousands of people visiting Seattle to buy comics, meet celebrities, cosplay their favorite characters and have a great time with other fellow comic lovers, the Foodie FriendsRead more
May I See Your Papers, Citizen? Seattle has had an extremely rocky history with street food over the years. When I first moved to Seattle the distinct lack of food culture was something I noticed right away, especially compared to other places that I have lived like Portland, OR and Chile. After living in Belltown and Capitol Hill for several years it is still very confusing in a lot of ways why you only see small hotdog vendors in spots that are prime picking for street food vendors: post-club and post-bar drunk walks like 2nd Ave in Belltown and Pike/PineRead more
My Favorite Seattle Lunch Steelhead Diner has a special place in my heart, it really does. It’s true that Nicole and I are often down at Pike Place Market either picking up produce, shopping at the Souk, Bavarian Meats or Uli’s Sausage or even buying comic books from Golden Age Collectibles. Whenever we end our time at the market around lunch time, realistically any time between 11am – 3pm, we try to work out some excuse to go out to eat. There are so many great restaurants at the market, especially seafood and lunch restaurants, and you all know howRead more
Korean-Hawaiian Fusion with Tacos! Most of the restaurants that we review here at The Foodie Friends are large-ish affairs, most with full bars, several menu items and options for absolutely everyone. What we don’t get across sometimes is our total love for the sometimes over-looked art of the Food Truck. When I lived in Chile my favorite local foods were all available from street vendors or walk-up food shops and I would go there often to get that fix. Whenever Nicole and I visit Portland we always make a point of eating as many meals as we can at theRead more
Even PAX Conventioneers Need to Eat! Well first of all: Welcome! And don’t worry, The Foodie Friends are also attending PAX just as we have the last several years, and as local knowledge gurus, gamers and former college students on a budget we know that you’re probably here just for a couple days, are trying to see as much of the convention as possible without breaking the bank or straying too far from the action. If you feel that’s accurate then this post is for you! This article is going to focus on quick reviews of restaurants and food vendorsRead more
Berry Infused Alcohol Adds Dimension! Flavored alcohol has always been a favorite for those that drink. Bitters were one of the earliest alcohol infusions and were the result of fruit rinds and herbs left to steep in liquor. When you infuse liquor with a flavor it lets you add that flavor to drinks or food while preserving the mixture without loads of sugar. Theoretically you could infuse water with flavors in your house, but water takes the flavors less readily and doesn’t prevent the decomposition of organic material like alcohol does. Today we’re going to learn how to infuse alcoholRead more
Authentic and Fresh Mexican Food for the Right Price As you can tell by the food map that Nicole and I have put together, one of my favorite areas for good food in Seattle is Capitol Hill. The whole neighborhood is great for getting a decent cross selection of medium priced and innovative restaurants in a comfortable, friendly and walkable zone. While Capitol Hill isn’t as inexpensive or as culinarily diverse as the Central District or Beacon Hill, it gives as good as it gets and there is no shortage of places for me to try on any given nightRead more
A Menagerie of Beer In case you missed my post last week, I continued my ongoing discussion about different kinds of beer and tips for beginners to beer drinking. Nicole and I also discussed beer in the second half of The Foodie Friends podcast (Episode #006) and we went into a little more detail on our own personal preferences. I am going to continue my breakdown of the different types of beer today; last week it was a discussion on lighter beers and this week we will look at some of the darker styles. This is not a scientific breakdown,Read more
Healthy Guinea Pig, Reporting In Over the last couple of weeks I have been talking a lot about healthy eating. I’ve been on a very strict diet and exercise routine under the guise of co-writing a fitness book with my friend and personal trainer Josh. As I was an ideal candidate, both by eating way too much in both volume and calories in addition to getting minimal exercise beyond the walking I do to and from bus stops, I volunteered myself to be the guinea pig that would be the before and after pictures. There is really nothing much worseRead more
A Bountiful Beer Garden Last week I wrote a little about different ways to approach trying new beers and ways to think about this amazing beverage that has helped to shape so much of our world. This week I wanted to do a little bit more of a technical breakdown and explain what the different major types of beers are in hopes that it will help newbies know what they are getting themselves into. One thing to remember is that for the most part beers fall into a “light” or “dark” designation. There are styles that break this mold, likeRead more
