Congratulations, You’re Leaving the Nest! Now what should you eat? Luckily the Foodie Friends have some recommendations for you! For the entire week and a half, Luke and I will be sharing some recipes, cookbook recommendations and more for those students on their way to college who are looking to live cheap, but live well. We don’t like being cliche, but ramen noodles are a really, really cheap noodle alternative compared even to $1 pasta; however, cheap ramen dishes shouldn’t focus on the ramen, but the cheap and tasty ingredients and broth that goes with it. College students should checkRead more
My personal history with cooking I have been cooking since I was 10-years-old. My mother worked swing shift at the local hospital. She would leave our evening meal partly prepared but it was up to me to have the meal completed, table set , food hot and ready when Dad got home from work at 5:10pm. My father loved his gravies and it was his penchant for sauces that had him showing me how to make a basic roux at age eleven so he could have ‘milk’ gravy with his fried chicken. From this early exposure to old fashioned homeRead more
Snacks that Will Last Through Opening Ceremonies Like many Americans, the opening ceremonies is a chance to celebrate our country in just as much as it is an opportunity to check out other international athletes. Also the ceremonies are a perfect excuse to invite friends over for a casual party which includes commenting on the national garb for each country similar to what women love to do when watching the red carpet entrance to the Oscars. Whatever reason you watch the opening ceremonies, I bet you will want some snacks to go with the hours and hours of entertainment andRead more

We’ve chosen a couple recipes that represent the best of English cuisine: Bangers and Mash of England If you’re in Seattle, I highly recommend getting Bangers from Uli’s Famous Sausage Inc. in Pike’s Market, which are the ones pictured above. This dish makes a great dinner or breakfast! Ingredients: 2 lbs potatoes, preferably red potatoes 8 links of Bangers sausages 1 TbspRead more
4th Annual Dragon Fest: Keeps Getting Better The festival held on the July 14th and 15th weekend marked the fourth year of the Dragon Fest in Seattle’s International District. Dragon Fest is the first of the SeaFair festivals and is heavily sponsored by McDonald’s and Snoqualmie Casino, but all the shine is on local food, vendors and performances. Foodie Attractions at Dragon Fest I have attended the festival the past two years because luckily for the organizers, every time I’ve gone, the weather has been beautiful. Even though grey skies loomed, the festival continued on in much merriment with danceRead more
From First to Last Bite, You’ll Be Saying ‘Delizioso!’ Il Fornaio is an chain restaurant serving authentic Italian cuisine attached to one of downtown Seattle’s classiest shopping centers, Pacific Place: home to a Barney’s, Kate Spade and more high-fashion stores. Though the clothes feature a hefty price tag, dining at Il Fornaio doesn’t cost an arm or a leg, especially if foodies try happy hour or a quick sampling of their soup-and-sandwich Il Fornaio Cafe on the first floor. We usually stay away from chain restaurants because of their usual lack of local, quality and fresh ingredients. For a coupleRead more

A Menagerie of Beer In case you missed my post last week, I continued my ongoing discussion about different kinds of beer and tips for beginners to beer drinking. Nicole and I also discussed beer in the second half of The Foodie Friends podcast (Episode #006) and we went into a little more detail on our own personal preferences. I am going to continue my breakdown of the different types of beer today; last week it was a discussion on lighter beers and this week we will look at some of the darker styles. This is not a scientific breakdown,Read more
Healthy Guinea Pig, Reporting In Over the last couple of weeks I have been talking a lot about healthy eating. I’ve been on a very strict diet and exercise routine under the guise of co-writing a fitness book with my friend and personal trainer Josh. As I was an ideal candidate, both by eating way too much in both volume and calories in addition to getting minimal exercise beyond the walking I do to and from bus stops, I volunteered myself to be the guinea pig that would be the before and after pictures. There is really nothing much worseRead more
